The first Biowatch KZN Agroecology Farmers’ Fair took place in Mtubatuba, northern KwaZulu-Natal, on 12 October 2022.
The event, which included an agroecology produce market, facilitated exchange and learning between farmers from different areas, as well as between elders with years of experience and upcoming young farmers. The Fair included an agroecology produce market, celebrations, demonstrations, exchanges and presentations on beekeeping, institutional buying, PGS (participatory guarantee system) and marketing to retailers.
The next day, farmers gathered to dialogue and share knowledge and experiences on farmers’ rights in practice, the revival of farmer-led seed systems, and of restrictive policies which undermine their rights and food sovereignty.
