Position: Communications and Media Officer (Durban)


Established in 1999 as an environmental justice NGO, Biowatch works with small-holder farmers, other civil society organisations and government to ensure that people have control over their food, agricultural processes and resources, and other natural resources, within a bio-diverse, agroecological and sustainable system.

Biowatch South Africa holds the fiduciary responsibility for the regional Seed and Knowledge Initiative (SKI). The primary aim of SKI is to revive and enhance traditional seeds and knowledge systems and to deepen understanding about their functioning, within the context of supportive agricultural, cultural and ecological practices.

Purpose of the role

  • To deliver effective and timely communication of the Seed and Knowledge Initiative’s activities within the partners in Southern Africa, between partners and to various stakeholders within civil society, government and the general public, including coordinating copy and editing publications.
  • To support the promotion of SKI and its range of activities through pro-actively utilising social, specialist and mainstream media (including print and audio-visual media).
  • To support the generation and sharing of knowledge, understanding and coverage of agricultural biodiversity, seed sovereignty and agroecology.
  • To provide capacity building support to SKI partners in terms of communication and media.

Essential requirements for the Communications and Media Officer:

  • Proven keen interest in social justice and community development.
  • Some understanding of food sovereignty and agroecology.
  • Some experience in how to take an idea from conception to publication including coordinating tasks such as commissioning content, writing, editing, design, printing and distribution.
  • Experience in developing a story into a cohesive product.
  • Ability to deliver high quality work on time in a complex context and pressurised environment: able to work on a number of competing deadlines and to multitask.
  • Some experience (2-3 years) of working within a media or journalism environment such as student or community newspaper, online or print.
  • Technology and social media friendly.
  • Excellent PC Skills (Microsoft).
  • Driver’s License.
